The Hoggard’s of Huggate 1.40 speed class, was won by Louise Whitaker riding Mandy Hall’s Blush, they came home a speedy 13 seconds faster than the 2nd placed Laura Robinson on Cree Cruiser. The East Yorkshire & Humberside Area Trial was next, a high class field of 14, including John Whitaker with 2 horses contested a first prize of £1000, which was very generously supported by Brown’s Greengrocers of Pocklington. Course Builder Paul Thompson built a technical track incorporating the permanent water jump which was last used 27 years ago, the course was a true test for horse and rider, the Bill Downs Memorial fence, a set of white planks fell the most. 4 clears were joined by the fastest 4 faults for an exciting jump off, Temple Ryefield and Northallerton based Paul Barker jumped clear in 44.91 seconds to beat ‘local’ Tracey Newman on her own 16 year old Alcina who also jumped clear in 46.30. In 3rd Place was Jemma Knox riding her own Senator W. Paul Barker also had a clean sweep in the Mercedes Benz of Hull supported Ride and Drive, winning on Amira II and second on Zeb. Matt Millin provided us with excellent commentary during the day in the Grand Ring and also hosted the public course walk of which proved to be hugely popular with hundreds flocking in to the ring to look at the course for the Area Trial, the Holderness Hounds where equally popular with the spectators.
In Ring 1, classes were well subscribed, Hayley McCaie won the 30 starter KBIS British Novice on Paula Crofts Alicante, 45 started in the Equissage Discovery, ten clears went forward to the jump off which was won by Louise Whitaker on Checkmate. Ria Gingley scored a win in the 1.05 on Volanda. Helen Robson is now the Area 15a 1 metre Champion; she rode her own Frankie’s Boy to win. Thirty Four jumped in the Newcomers with Joanne Whitaker winning on her parents Barrichello. Amy Duncan won the 1.10 open on her own horse Adagio. Alix Shaw riding Warren Beau won the last class of the day in Ring 1 the Foxhunter/1.20 jumping a lovely double clear in 37.22 to take the class, with Darren Smith in 2nd on Bailey.
Ponies were out in force to, Amanda Cole course built in Ring 2. Nicola Wright won the first class of the day. Area 15a member Dan Patrick finished 1st & 2nd in the 128/138cm Handicap. Dan also won the Area 15a Pony Championship on Hillgarth Riverdance, just beating Sophie Corney on West Flight. Sophie had previously just won the Discovery/90 cm open Gooig Spirit, Sarah Holmes finished 2nd. Sophie also won both the Pony 1m Open and Pony Foxhunter/1.10 on Ocean Breeze II. Julia Whinn won the Pony Newcomers class on Fluster Buster; Amy Jimmison was 2nd on Bastian. Senior Intro classes followed the Ponies, Nicola Burrell won the first class, and Gabby Clarkson was 2nd on Bjork. Area 15a’s youngest committee member Lionna Mays won both the 90cm and 1 metre classes on Landwind.

Quotes from Riders:

" Just got back from area 15a at Hull Show. Absolutely brilliant! Run in a park in Hull city centre, back to back show jumping in three rings and there were 1,000s there and I mean 1,000s! No charge to get in to the public, what a brilliant way to bring show jumping back to peoples minds in a positive way. Top class! All credit to the organisers." Pop on my wall and read the feedback! Amazing! This was an area show, It was very well advertised in the city, 1st thing we saw when checked in at travel inn was the show being advertised in there. They even had a a parade of foxhounds that was brilliantly recieved by the public, it really took away the "elitest" image that our sport has portrayed over the years. Maybe all area committees should take their shows to the nearest big park? Riders loved it, public loved it, officials loved it. Simply brilliant.

Absolutely Fabulous day wasn't it! ...and great to have fun and educative commentary!....Just for the record Eklie's Elkie Jimenez-Peters car in the "ride and drive" was stuck in 1st gear.....suppose thats what a "semi" automatic is!!?!?!!? Never seen her go so slow...might buy her one for safety purposes!

Thousands of spectators flocked to East Park in Hull, as the word ‘Show’ was put back in to Jumping, and what a show it was, all classes were fantastically supported and watched by an enthusiastic crowd who welcomed hundreds of horses and riders in to ‘their’ park. Jumping on superb ground started at 8.30am and finished just short of 12 hours later, competitors came from all over, many from the North West and Midlands to compete against Yorkshire based riders. It was a clean sweep of Yorkshire wins in the Grand Ring, Otley based Karl Fuller was riding his own Wet Wet Wet, they scored a double on the day, winning both the Area 15a 1.25 Championship Final & The easibed supported National 1.30 Open.
